Call for Residency Proposals 2010-2011
The Ted Harrison Artist Retreat Society (THARS) is now accepting applications from visual artists for residencies for 2010 – 2011.
There are five residency periods available:
- September 14 to October 31, 2010
- November 3 to December 20, 2010
- January 7 to February 21, 2011
- February 24 to April 11, 2011
- April 15 to May 30, 2011
Deadline: Postmarked no later than Monday July 12, 2010.
Notification of acceptance will be given August 16, 2010.
The Retreat is available for the summer months of June, July and August for use by individuals or groups of artists on a rental basis for the purpose of working on personal projects or conducting workshops , master classes or other art related projects. Please contact THARS for further information related to rental fees and availability.
The THARS residency program is intended to give visual artists an opportunity to concentrate on the research, development and production of a project or body of work . Situated in a remote and inspirational setting, the residency is a 2000 sq. ft. log home and studio overlooking Crag Lake in the Yukon. It is located 90 kms south of Whitehorse, in the heart of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation’s traditional territory.
THARS offers artists the opportunity to work in a solo, collaborative or interactive working environment. Residency periods range from 6 - 10 weeks.
In the interest of promoting an exchange of ideas and cultures, venues will be provided for residents to interact with local artists and community members through talks, demonstrations, workshops, or exhibitions. THARS provides a living space and studio, and CARFAC fees for community outreach work such as lectures and workshops
Residents are responsible for travel and personal expenses and are encouraged to apply to Canada Council or other funding agencies to help defer travel costs.
APPLICATION GUIDELINES
Eligibility:
Established and emerging professional Canadian and international visual artists are invited to apply to the Ted Harrison Artist Retreat Society. In particular, artists from the Canadian north (Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Yukon) and First Nation artists from across the country are encouraged to apply.
Program Objectives:
- To provide artists with an opportunity to work in relative solitude, in an inspirational setting and for an extended period of time.
- To provide training opportunities for northern artists and the community.
- To encourage and develop an appreciation of the arts in our community through the presentation of workshops, open studio visits, lectures and exhibitions.
- To promote an exchange of ideas between artists/citizens of different cultural and regional backgrounds.
- To increase the economic well being of artists and further the cultural industry in the Yukon by investing in the development of the arts.
Working Environment:
Throughout the year, the residence will accommodate different working environments, including:
- Independent artists seeking solitude for their work
- Artist couples, working on independent or collaborative projects, who can share a living and working space. Only under special circumstances may family accompany an artist. Details must be discussed with the Residency Coordinator.
Facilities:
The residence is a newly built log home and studio. The second floor is a 900 sq. ft. open studio with large windows overlooking the forest and lake. There is a daybed in the studio that can serve as a second sleeping area. On the first floor is a 900 sq. ft. living space, with one bedroom. During the summer months there a screened in porch with a fold-out couch and additional space for one or two workshop participants in Ted Harrison’s original one room log cabin.
Submission Requirements:
- Contact Information, including ALL of the following: current address, phone number (or a number where a message can be received), and an email address.
- Residency Preferences. Please specify your first and second choice (if you have one) for residency choices for the period between September 2010 and May 2011.
- C.V., including exhibition history, education or training, publications, and collections or collectors of your art work.
- Project Proposal, outlining: the research, development, and/or production of a new or ongoing body of work; the resources you will need to execute your project; and how participation in the residency will benefit your career.
- Statement of Interest, outlining 2 ideas for community outreach, such as workshops , artist talks, demonstrations or collaborative work.
- 2 letters of support.
- Documentation of Work, including a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 photographs of your work; or a sample of your work (film, video), where applicable. DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL ARTWORK.
- Slide List, if applicable, stating title, medium, dates and size of each piece.
- Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope.
Please note:
- Artist couples should apply individually for the residency period and identify their partner applicants.
- Each member of a collaborative team should apply individually and include a joint proposal and documentation of past collaborative projects and/or independent work.
