Ted Harrison
Artist Retreat Society  (THARS)

Our Residency Facilities and Location

The residency, named after well-known and former Yukon artist, Ted Harrison, is a newly built 2 storey log home and studio. The retreat is part of a supportive community of 20 local residents at Crag Lake, many of whom are visual artists.

The second floor of the cabin is a 900 sq. ft. open studio with large windows overlooking the forest and Crag Lake. There is a daybed in an alcove of the studio that could accommodate a second sleeping area. On the first floor, a 900 sq. ft. living space, with one bedroom, accommodates an independent artist, or an artist couple. During the summer months Ted Harrison's original one room log cabin provides additional studio space or accommodation for two or three workshop participants.

The THARS studio has limited resources. Residents are responsible for providing any specialized equipment required for research, development and production of their proposed project. Please contact the Residency Coordinator for a list of available equipment.

Please note:

  • No smoking or pets are allowed in the residency building.
  • Guests, including partners, family and friends cannot be invited to accompany artists in residence for the duration of their stay.
  • Under only specific and extenuating circumstances may children accompany an artist in residence, details of which will need to be discussed with the Residency Coordinator.

Applicants should be aware that the Retreat is in a true wilderness area. While there are year round residents at Crag Lake, it is a relatively remote setting. The Retreat is 14 kilometres from the village of Carcross and basic services and is 90 kilometres from Whitehorse. There is abundant wildlife in the immediate vicinity including deer, moose, rabbits, eagles, black bears, grizzly bears, sheep and wolves.

THARS provides:

  • Living space and studio space, including all utilities at no cost to the artist. Please note that the Retreat is on a water delivery system, and artists are asked to conserve water as much as possible.
  • CARFAC fees for community outreach work such as workshops, lectures and slide talks.

Residents are responsible for:

  • All travel costs to and from Whitehorse, Yukon.
  • Transportation to and from the Retreat at Crag Lake to Whitehorse, a distance of 90 km.
  • All materials, including any specialized equipment needed.
  • Providing an open studio visit at the residency site, and at least one community outreach workshop or artist presentation in Whitehorse, and possibly neighbouring communities.
  • Completing an exit survey and providing a brief written summery of work done while at the Retreat.

Community Outreach:

A priority for THARS is to contribute to the rich and diverse cultural life across the Yukon by sharing ideas, experiences and techniques between Yukon artists, national artists, and community members.

THARS promotes an awareness of varied and distinct cultural art forms, which are present in the North and other regions of Canada, through the development of community and educational and recreational programming and events.

Community outreach opportunities may include: open studio visits, slide talks, lectures, workshops, collaborative community projects, and/or the donation of an art piece. The Residency Coordinator will facilitate venues that you wish to participate in. CARFAC fees will be paid, where applicable.
